I have a Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow column clock on which the label quickly deteriorating. Is there a recommended practice for stablizing the label and preventing further loss ?

Thanks,

Tom T

My method is to remove the backboard if the label is inside. If its on the outside, the board is accessible.
Mix HIDE GLUE half and half with water. Using a soft brush and the label inclined slightly. Saturate the label with the glue. If there are bubbles not getting glue, you have to prick or incise the bubble to get the glue behind. Use plenty of glue.
Next, cover the label (and glue) with a sheet of Saranwrap. Squeege the excess glue away, working from the center of the label. I use a plastic spatula. Use a damp cloth to pick up the excess glue. When its all smooth and rubbed out, cover the saranwrap with a plastic sheet-like X-ray film. (Thats what I use. Ask any clinic for some waste exposed film). Place a sheet of at least one inch thick foam rubber over all this and weight down. Clamps-sandbags, whatever you have. Let cure for at least 48 hours. Now, disassemble and get ready to remove the saran wrap. Peel off at a 360 degree angle. Go slowly, it there's any pull away of the label, press down with the thumb and move on. If you have questions, contact me. < welchdoc@yahoo.com>

:smile:Peel off at 360 degree angle? At any angle up to 180 degrees, maybe. Unless you are going to pull the wrap through the wood, I dont see how the angle can exceed 180 degrees.
