Hi Steve-
I've salvaged barrel hooks like this (in place) by filing a new catch on the edge of the hook. You will need to clean out the barrel so you can see what you are doing. Then with a small, flat file you can under cut the barrel hook and shape it so it will catch the spring again.
Also, in addition to examining the barrel for bent teeth, you will need to check the hook to see if it is loose and the barrel to see if it is bubbled on the outside at the hook. Any of those conditions, if present, will need to be addressed for the barrel to be considered safe.
Let us know what you find in the way of bent teeth, etc...and we can go from there. Good luck with it!
