Hi Steve-

I've salvaged barrel hooks like this (in place) by filing a new catch on the edge of the hook. You will need to clean out the barrel so you can see what you are doing. Then with a small, flat file you can under cut the barrel hook and shape it so it will catch the spring again.

Also, in addition to examining the barrel for bent teeth, you will need to check the hook to see if it is loose and the barrel to see if it is bubbled on the outside at the hook. Any of those conditions, if present, will need to be addressed for the barrel to be considered safe.

Let us know what you find in the way of bent teeth, etc...and we can go from there. Good luck with it!

David.

The bent teeth may be a trick of the camera, but the lip of the barrel sure looks chewed up to me. You can remove the lid without digging at the brass. Put the barrel in the palm of your hand with the cover down. Strike the arbor once with a small brass hammer, and the cover is off.

If the barrel is bowed out of shape, I'll tell you how I round it out. That might also be a trick that the camera is playing.

I'd clean that thing up before proceeding.

Hello Everyone,
My thanks to all who answered my questions. I ended up by re-working the hook as David suggested, and it know functions very well. However, had this not been possible I would have gone to the method suggested by Phil in a previous post. As usual, you guys really helped. Post script: the teeth were fine, the angle of the photograph wasn't; I did clean the thing up as suggested; the marks on the lip were made by a previous putterer though I certainly have the capacity to do such a thing and worse.
