1. Personnel Changes:
Andrew Pilotti has joined the staff as the Director of Development. Andy has 14 years of experience working with non-profit organizations and is developing a fundraising program for the NAWCC.
After many years of volunteer service, Lee Davis has resigned as Volunteer Coordinator. Although Lee's new position as Secretary of Philadelphia Chapter 1 will take much of his time, he will continue to help us with volunteer dinners and special recognition programs. We are searching for a new coordinator within our corps of our many active volunteers.
Student intern, Ellie Williams, has joined the Headquarters staff for the summer. She is assisting with marketing, gift shop sales, special events and exhibit development. She will continue her studies in communication at Millersville University in the fall as a senior. Beth Laughman, a rising senior at Messiah College majoring in history education, is employed for the summer as a gift shop assistant.
2. Membership:
Membership in the organization totals 30,167. Membership has shown a gradual decline. May showed a net loss of 125 members. A program of trading ads for NAWCC membership in watch publications for ads in the Mart has been instituted. A Bulletin, letter of introduction and membership application was sent to 310 top Science and Technology libraries across the country.
3. Library and Research Center:
During the month of May the Library and Research Center had 183 visitors, circulated 267 items and acquired 23 items by donation or purchase. Volunteer Nancy Ankrum is organizing the Seth Thomas Collection and volunteer Ken DeLuca is creating a new index for the Seth Thomas tower clock ledgers.
4. The Museum:
The Museum opened an exhibit of Pennsylvania clocks on May 7. The exhibit is funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission. An exhibit of Hamilton watches and memorabilia will open in October to coincide with the 110th anniversary of the Hamilton brand; preliminary work on the exhibit has begun. The Museum's self-guided tour pamphlet has been revised to be more user friendly.
Museum admissions and gift shop sales showed increases from last year. The Association of Science Technology Centers Passport Program began May 1 and NAWCC members and their families can now visit over 250 science and technology centers free of charge.
5. The School of Horology:
The Alumni Association has applied to NAWCC to become a Chapter. Student enrollment is close to maximum in both the watch and clock classes.
6. The Web Site:
Our web site has become increasingly important to our organization and during the month of May the web site had 48,963 hits per day. The average session length was over eleven minutes. The website is a steady source of new members (96 in May) and renewals (50 in May), but is still weakly supporting gift shop sales. Only 17 gift shop orders were from the website.
