The following is from NAWCC President Doug Cowan, who sent it at 1:30 pm 4/16. dcclock@juno.com

Dear Members. The NAWCC is currently involved in an IRS review of the Association's 501(c)(3) status as a tax exempt educational organization. This has been underway at intervals for several weeks. No IRS finding or determination has been made, and probably will not be for a few more weeks. You may think of it so far as an audit that has not been completed. So, there's not much to report yet except we are taking the matter very seriously and cooperating fully.

We believe, but have not confirmed, that this is part of a 2002 project by the IRS to sample the compliance of up to 35 tax exempt segments. Loss of our 501(c)(3) status would move us to a less tax-advantaged category.

The question being pondered by the IRS appears to relate to whether the NAWCC meets the minimum criteria for educating the public, as distinct from educating our membership. As soon as this comes into better focus, I will post further news.

Sincerely, Doug Cowan, President
