View Full Version : Elgin Convertible Cannon Pinion

I have a 16s Elgin Convertible, the ¾ plate one, that I am resurrecting and I can’t figure out how the friction for the cannon pinion happens. The cannon pinion is broken in two pieces, split up the middle, but doesn’t have any springy part or dimple. If fits over the end of the shaft that goes through the hollow center shaft of the center wheel; this shaft doesn’t have any groove near the end or any other feature to locate the pinion. The setting gear is on its other end. Can anyone explain how the friction is provided so that the movement can drive the hands yet still be overridden to set the hands?

I haven’t had much luck finding a cannon pinion or the hollow center shaft, so if anyone has parts to sell or can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

On the Elgin convertible the cannon pinion remains stationary on the setting arbor on which it is driven friction tight (but not intended to slip). The friction between running and setting occurs between the setting arbor and the hollow center-wheel arbor.

These parts should be stocked by S LaRose.I don't think I have a cannon pinion but I think I have the center wheel.I would need measurements.
