I recently won a Lord Elgin wrist watch on ebay. I usually date the watch using the serial number on the movement. However, this movement does not have a visible serial number. A picture of the watch and movement are on ebay with item number 8947019771.

Would the serial number be somewhere else on the movement where it cannot be seen? If so, where?

Thanks.

Hello mersus99, I took a quick look over at the Elgin watch database and found that their were Elgin movements made without serial numbers and had just the three digits like yours. I looked up 688 and all I found out is that it had 21 jewels, which we already knew. Maybe someone knows more or where you can find out more info on your watch. BTW, nice watch, love those lugs! Take care buddy.

Thanks for that information. I have never seen a movement without a serial number before, but I guess there is always a first time.

I think some of the Lord Elgins are as interesting as the Hamiltons of the same era, and tend to be a much better value. I know a lot about Hamiltons, but am still learning about Elgins.

I agree Mersus99. That is what is so neat about this hobby. Once you get bored with one companies watches you can move on to another brand and it always seems they have more for you to learn and discover. Take care my friend.
