Gentlemen,

I have a beautiful Illinois Pocket watch and the gold filled case is in mint condition with NO brassing.

What can I do to avoid brassing? Does that mean that I simply should not carry it?

Kind regards,

Melus

Hi Melus:

Welcome to the NAWCC Pocket Watch Message Board!

There is a big difference between mint and not being worn to the brass. If the watch is truly mint, I wouldn't carry it. A mint antique watch is enough of a collectable that its value would significantly decrease with visible signs of wear.

If it has been obviously carried, but has no brass showing, and you want to carry it occasionally, don't worry about it.

For more constant use, I suggest a flannel-lined pocket, or a flannel or suede pouch within which to carry it.

I intentionally carry a watch that already shows brass (on a daily basis) and I don't worry about.

I would never carry a MINT watch. However, I have been collecting for 30+ years and I have only had a few MINT watches in the hundreds I have owned. As Kent said, MINT watches are too rare to mess with. Once you wear them once they are not MINT again.

Wearing a nice watch is a different thing. Look at your watch carefully. I don't really believe in MINT.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Do you carry a pocket watch on a regular basis?

If so, how do you carry it? In a vest pocket, shirt pocket, pants pocket?

Kind regards,

Melus

I've carrying a Hamilton 992B daily for over twenty-five years (except for when it is being serviced). As perviously mentioned, the case already shows brass, so I don't worry about it.

I buy pants with watch pockets whenever possible, Levis 505s are my favorites. For better slacks and suit pants, a watch pocket can be added when the rest of the fitting is done. In on store, some years ago, I picked out two suits, a sports jacket and three pairs of slacks. The tailor said that they don't do watch pockets. I told the salesman that either there would be watch pockets added (and paid for) or there wouldn't be any sale. He took the tailor aside and when they came back, the watch pockets were no longer an issue.

Less expensive pants can have watch pockets added by a local tailor, or at a cleaners that does alterations.

I use a chain to fasten the watch to a leather strap that forms a belt loop when I wear jeans. For dress wear, I have dress chains.
