I recently obtained a "Teacher" gold ladies Pendant watch with two covers. It has an engraved date of 1886 on the back case. Can anyone tell me who made this watch and if it is worth repair/cleaning?
Thanks,
Jim Kinder

James Welcome to the boards. You will have to give more info for us to id it. The best way is to take picture of movement and post it here. Look at movement it should have company name on it, there also should be a number there the serial #. With company name and serial number we should be able to id it for you. Please do not post numbers on the case they will not help.

Bill, Thanks for responding. Do not see how to open back. No slot for a knife point. Would hate to damage.

Bill,
Thanks again.
The watch was made by "Elgin Natl Watch Co" and has a S/N 1798991

Your watch by the serial # is a 6 size guiled hunter movement model 1 lever set ( you pull a lever at 4 out to set hands) with 13 jewels made in 1886. This is a higher grade for a woman's watch because of the 13 jewels.

Bill,
Once again, thanks!
With the name "Teacher" on the face, is this unique? I looked on an Elgin site and they did make "personal watches" but "Teacher" was not one of the many names listed. Still wondering whether to repair/clean .

I have never heard of Teacher on a dial either but they made many thousands of different private labeled dials. As for having it repaired that is up to you, I would say that a 13 jewel 6 size is in the upper 10-15 % of ladies watches for that time frame. If you do deside to have it fixed check with a couple of repair shops if you can.

Any chance of seeing a picture? As Bill has already noted, this is most likely a "private label." I have recorded over 1300 private label Elgins in my online database, but this would be the first with this name.

Has anyone seen a "Teacher" PL by a different manufacturer?

John,
I took the watch to a repairman today who specializes in Elgins and he confirmed it is a "private" label. Having it cleaned as the value of the solid gold hunters case alone was $350 - 400 back in 1996. Tried to take a picture and they came out blurry so that you can't read the "Teacher".
