I have my great Grand Mothers 7J 0 size Elgin which is running fast by 6 minutes a day. I have adjusted the regulator as much as possible. It was cleaned about a year and a half ago. Any ideas what could be causing this to run so fast? Thanks.

One of the more likely causes would be a problem with the hairspring. The hairspring will pass through the regulator pins only once. It may be that a second loop of the hairspring has become caught on the regulator, or that it is caught on something else.

Take your best magnifying glass and examine it closely. Be very careful fixing it though, it takes a gentle hand to avoid from causing damage to the hairspring.

It might also be magnetized - in that case you will see loops of the spring that are stuck together. If this is true you should bring it to a watch repair shop to get it demagnetized...

Jason,

Thanks for the advice. Since we live so close, is there a local watchmaker you can refer me to? Thanks.

Seth:

There used to be a guy in the old Sears plaza on Hempstead Turnpike and Gardners avenue that repaired watches in house, but I don't know if he's still there.

That guy down in Georgia

Does anyone have a link to the NAWCC referral list?

I am not aware of an NAWCC referral list. There is a list of member web sites on the NAWCC Web Site. http://www.nawcc.org/headquarters/memlinks.htm

I don't think the NAWCC is in any position to recommend repair people.

If anybody else has an opionion of why this watch may be running fast by 6 minutes a day or a local watchmaker on Long Island, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

I used to live on Long Island. Try my friend Mario at Time Source in Huntington. His shop which has a good stock is on New York Ave near Main street (25A) He has a watchmaker on premisis on the week ends and can send you to someone if his guy can't do it.

Tell him I said hello.
