wonder if anyone can help with a watch problem I am having i'm working on an unknown cylinder escapement pocket watch, probably english, and it has a key setting with the stem going right through both plates, with what apears to be a short cannon pinnion on one side, and the winding square on the other. until I work out how to remove the ends of this stem, then I cant seperate the plates for cleaning. I guess I may be overlooking the obvious, but not having much luck working out how it comes apart. I will try to post pictures with this of each side of the plates. maybe someone knows, or has come across this before.

hoping someone can help, regards, Marcus

Hi Marcus, basically it should happen to punch it through with the right staking tool. I had a similiar movement some time ago where I made it. If it hasn't been removed since 100 years it could be a bit difficult to do.
By the way, can you tell me how you make it to post the images directly into the forum? That would be a great help for me since I do not have a web page to add an image I want to share
Thanks Chris

Chris:

Currently, Tom Chaudoir, the NAWCC Message Board Administrator, is recommending that those who do not have web space in which to post pictures register for a free account at flickr.com (http://flickr.com/register.gne). This may now open a Yahoo page, but it will still let you register to post pictures. Their menu-driven procedure for loading pictures is about as easy as it gets. After you enlarge the picture, using flickr's magnifying glass icon (the magnifying glass icon appears in a toolbar above the loaded & saved picture once you've clicked on the picture), scroll down below the picture to find the field labeled "1. Grab the photo's URL:" The link in that field is the one to post on the NAWCC Pocket Watch Message Board. Vic Rose has posted an excellent old ref::Description on How to Post a Picture on the NAWCC Clock Message Board.

Good luck,

My suggestion wiould be to leave that one wheel attached. If it is swadged on it was probably intended to stay that way. Clean and lubricate as best you can and you'll be OK. If you HAVE to remove it, to repair the pivot hole for example, you wil have to make a call as to whether to push-i.e. tap it out from the dial plate side, or pull. I don't reccommend either. If that pivot breaks off you've got a real headache. It is uncommon to have such a feature but it is more common on lower grades.
There are pinions on several dollar type watches that are the same deal. The part should be left alone.IMHO.

thanks to all who replied so far. this really has to come apart, as the plates cant be sepperated beacause this arbour is closed on both sides. so untill the wheel or the winding square come off, then the plates ownt sepperate, so cant clean the movement, and the watch wont go untill I clean it.

Ill try supporting the back plate and punching it off
regards, Marcus

Is it a collar on arbor holding the wheel on? If so, I'd think it would be possible to grind/cut the collar loose and make a new one when you reassemble.

Hi Marcus,
I've had this problem and I had to punch it through from the dial side. Because of the years it has been there it's not the easiest thing to do. I have also had them with a small pin through the wheel and collar that you can barely see and obviously need to punch this out first.

I was wondering could it be screwed on? It would be easy to put key on one side and needlenose on other side in indentations. Just a thought.

thanks to all that replied. this is just a friction fit push on wheel, the watch came apart easily, and should soon be going! apart from a broken click and an unhooked mainspring, it ticks away nicely when pressure is applied to the barrel.
thanks again, I do appreciate this.
