You'll need to do some looking to tell is it's a level or pendent set watch. To figure out if it's a lever set, remove the bezel (the part of the case that holds the crystal). If it's a lever set watch, you'll see the end of the lever to the right of the pendant. Use your fingernail to pull the lever away from the dial. When it's extended all the way out, the hands can be set using the winding crown. Before you put the bezel back on, make sure the setting lever is pushed all the way back in to the winding position.
If you don't see a lever, then it's a pendant set watch. Pull out on the winding crown to set the hands, but don't yank on it -- use a steady pulling motion.
