JUST WOW! Looks to me like a good 1,500 or more of that went for the fantastic box. It certainly wasn't for that beat up later model dial, the heavily scratched movement or the 'ho-hum' case. It's just all in the way you value things, and someone evidently values that box very highly... in fact about a G more than yours truly would have!
Of course imagine what that box would look like with a really nice watch sitting in it... but at that kind of price it won't be sitting here.

Without the melamine dial of course....
I figure that was a 1700.00 box

Nice Box, but not that nice. A similar empty box was on a sellers table in Orlando last winter for far far less without any takers. Guess I should of bought it

I like the watch but that dial is all scratched and the movement too, i can,t see plunking down 2700 US for it, never mind exchanging to Can funds, some people obviously have more money to spend than i do.

yes, interesting Hammy box. That's the 2nd or 3rd one I've seen offered on EBAY. I was almost tempted to bid.

So what was the deal here. It looks like a wide box, enough for two watches. Was it a "Buy a High Grade 960 and receive a FREE railroad timekeeper" http://www.nawcc.org/ubb/confused.gif
There was a promo advertisement back in about 1970 at the local Chrysler/Plymouth dealer. "Buy the wisk broom for 2199.99 and receive a Free Plymouth Valiant"
A while back on eBay the heading on a rather beat 940 said "Looks Like Pig, Runs Like a Deer" http://www.nawcc.org/ubb/eek.gif
Not the best marketing strategy but the darn thing broke 200.00!

Don,
Like someone else said, it is the second or third one of these seen on eb.
I think they were a movement shipper, Hamilton could stack movement tins in it for shipment to jeweler. I have a tin, don't see as many of them as one does of Waltham,Elgin, ect.....
Because of the slogan, "RAILROAD TIMEKEEPER OF AMERICA", I am inclined to date this to about 1909 to mid-teens.
The others seen had similar results at saletime.....

Did you notice the watch on the front of the locomotive has roman numerals?

uh huh,
it appears to be similar to logo on the time books....
The circa 1905 books have "RAILROAD TIMEKEEPER OF THE WORLD" this changes about 1909 or so... that is what I am going on...
the RN dial was available maybe to the late teens.... just a guess on that...
just noted something else also... the movement serial number shown on box is a 940, but these earlier movements were not marked.... especially the marking on the barrel bridge... this did not show until about 1906 or so.....
