Thanks to the information found in this forums I now know that the 950B was presented in an early Model A case (the one with “steps”), but I would like to know with which other cases came this grade off-factory.
I have seen examples of 950Bs into late Model A and Model #2 cases, which I think that are correct original factory matches, but I don't know what to think about other combinations (like 950Bs housed into GF #11, GF Fahys #6, or SS Model #15 cases) claimed as “original” by its sellers.
I have searched the NAWCC forums for a “Hamilton Railroad Model Cases - Grade 950B” listing like the useful ones about 992 and 992B cases, without getting any result.

The Hamilton catalogs only advertised the 950B in the Model "A", #2, #17.
The Model #6 was introduced in the late 20's for the 992 and was discontinued in the early 30's, so it definitely would not be correct for the 950B which was introduced about 1940.
I would think with a "special order", Hamilton would have placed the 950B in any case that was available for the 992B.

Well then, what is the heritage of the 950 in the Mainliner Case?

Pat,
To my knowledge, the "True Mainliner" was the first case that was designed specifically for a 950 series movement and that being the 950 Elinvar.
Beginning in 1924 with the first factory cased 992, the non-Elinvar lever-set 950's could be fitted into any of the 992 series cases.

j tell.......
you have to remember you are speaking of 3 'different' watches...
950
950E
950B
The 950 was sold as a movement only for some time, a few early ones offered in a long pendant hamilton marked case....
After the factory cased watches began, yes, it would be possible to see them in various cases, but you need to be aware of the time specific nature of the various case models... and when they were discontinued..
The 950E was offered in a couple of different case styles, i would have to recheck the catalogs to see if it was offered uncased, but i don't think so... and yes the 'mainliner' seems specific to the 950E in a certain time range.
The 950B was a factory cased watch, and again because of the twenty-plus year production, the cases are also time specific... as some of these cases were discontinued....
this is a bit complex to cover in one post, but if you click the 'find' at the top of the page and enter some search terms, you can find soooo much information...
if your interest is in the mainliner... enter that search term...
