Jeff:

When I input your serial number, 8,007,598 to the Elgin website "Online Elgin Serial Number Database" at:
http://elginwatches.org/databases/elgin_sn_intro.html
(you should copy this link and paste it in your browser address bar since directly linking to this website from the NAWCC Message Board is not possible)

It comes up as a grade 177, 6-size watch, of which over 200,000 were made. Would you please confirm the serial number.

O.K. Now I understand where the 598 comes from. The first grade No. 229 built was serial number 8,005,201. Your watch is serial number 8,005,798 - the 598th grade No. 229 built.

As far as how rare your watch is, well you have that information. There were only 3,800 built. This not considered particularly rare or uncommon, but once the numbers drop below 4,000 it starts to attrach attention - if the grade is notable for some other reason. I'm unaware of anything about the grade No. 229 that would distinguish it.
