This watch might be a genuine product of the United States Watch Company, which preceded the American Waltham Watch Company, although I am not sure about the 1863 date which seems very early.

If you go to the NAWCC Message Board, click on Find, and type in United States Watch Company you will find some information about the company there.

Hopefully, some of the American experts on here will be more helpful.

I see the opening price is 3500 Swedish kroner, which is about 380 euros or 480 US dollars. We aren't supposed to discuss values on here, but I can say that if I could buy a genuine US Watch Co for anywhere near that price, I would go for it.

Thank you for your answer. I was thinking that in 1863 the watches where key winded . And this is not.

You are right, of course. 1863 is much too early for stem wind.

Bengt,

Welcome to the NAWCC Message Board!

The dial on this watch is marked United States Watch Co., and the movement is marked U. S. Watch Co., two DIFFERENT companies, neither of which had any connection to Waltham. The United States Watch Co. was located in Marion. N. J., and the U. S. Watch Co. was located in Waltham, Mass., (as was the American Watch Co. which became Waltham). What is odd about this watch is that the dial and the movement are marked for TWO DIFFERENT COMPANIES! Can anyone tell us if this is as abnormal as I believe it to be? The movement appears to be a 6-size (34.7 mm) U. S. Watch Co. movement. If the serial number in the auction information is the movement serial number, it is from close to the end of the 19th century, MUCH later than the auction information!

Shugart (etc.) show this
movement as a

6-size, similar to what
they show as an 11-jewel grade 64

I'd find something else.

Oh, and yes, listed in Shugart
as "U. S. Watch Co. of Waltham",
the company "was organized
as the United States Watch Co.
in about 1885" according to
the same source. And so, confusion
with the serial number listings
of a different company possibly
resulted in an incorrect 1863
date attribution.

This is a United States Watch Co., of Watham and a nice one, as it has the acid etched finish.

It (the company) existed from 1884-1896.
