View Full Version : Is it ok to switch parts in watches?
When does part swithing become detrimental from a collector's viewpoint?

must have been a long day.
I'd say judging from the current rail road crowd as long as you at least keep the original smell of the watch you're OK..........

Mr.B,
Part swithing is OK as far as I know. Part switching however(as you know)leads to gobs
of rancorous debate. I respectfully suggest that you will find constructive input from our community if you would be specific about the watch you need restored. Heck, someone here might have the exact part you're looking for!

MRB............Cort is widely respected on this board (his response back to you is most valid).
Now if I just had a tip for this watch I'd be most happy. (hint regulator).

Loyd,
In my experience with ST Mdl5's is the whip springs, most if not ALL, are broken..... And all replacements are used up...Must have been a problem part for ST.........

the point , I believe missed, is the diff bet switching and sympathetic resporation/repair.

as far as parts go, as the famous old timer, the late Glenn Liggett used to say, "There is always one more!"

John,
I agree that Seth Thomas must have had a problem with whip springs. I have a pretty two-tone movement with a tip broken off the spring. I don't remember the model # at the moment. It's sad to learn these parts may be nonexistent because I had hoped to find one someday. Maybe I'll get lucky! I don't have a problem with restoring my watches with the correct parts, but IMO this is different than "switching."

Lloyd, I took a look in the whip box and did find one. It is yours at no cost if you want, I'll even donate the 39 cents to send it. Er....there's just one little issue I should mention. The regulator screw is broken off in the whip. I have no idea how to extract it(detemper, drill it out, retemper??utrasound, liquid wrench, engrave a new screw slot???). All I would hope for in return would be to know how you actually did it if you do get the screw out.
Email your address if you like to try.
