I am new to this but it sounds like it is a Waltham watch from around 1916 as you have stated. I assume the letters on the case refer to your grandfather? It is my understanding that the way pocket watchers "were" purchased is find a mechanism you like then buy a case to put it in, that or it was personalized for your grandfather sounds about right in this case.

The company in question(Waltham) went out of business(1957?) and was located in Massachusetts.

As I said I am new to this and hope that the info I have given is correct.

The only other information I can add, which comes from the serial number list in the, "Waltham Pocket Watch Identification and Price Guide" which is still available from, www.hoapress.com (http://www.hoapress.com) is the following:

16 size, Model 1908, Grade No 625.

Some of the resident experts will probably pipe in and be able to give you more info.

Vince:

You can see where your watch fit into the Waltham line in the 1917 Oskamp-Nolting Catalog at: http://elginwatches.org/scans/sales_catalogs/1917_Oskamp-Nolting/m_pg_W4.html
(you should copy this link and paste it in your browser address bar since directly linking to this website from the NAWCC Message Board is not possible)

The grade NO. 625 is in the lower left-hand corner.
