I also answered this in the WW Forum. The trick that my goldsmith used was to use gold solder to repair the case and then gold plate as close to the original color as possible. I think this is a reasonable repair for wrist watch cases but would not recommend it for pocket watches. You would not want to make a hole in the case just to get a good purchase for the gold.
