Least I think it is a Hamilton 925 serial number 313607. Runs great.
I bought it reasonable on Flea Bay, the pics were fuzzy, and NO mention of the toolwork someone did on the back plate over the manufacturer name and town.
If its Not a Hamilton, then I would understand, disguising it for fraudulant purposes.
Anyone have a 924 or 925 small plate they are not using ?

HenryB,
Why would anyone do this to a Hamilton?
...or any watch for that matter! :frown:
Looks like a Hammy alright, but I think it's a 16s 975.
On the upside, it looks like a pretty nice dial!

Mike

Henry,
You just mixed up for grade and size on this request.
You have a 975 16s in the pictures. I have several bridges that will fit. If you will send me a private email I will work out the details.
When you get it you may want to XXX out the old numbers on the back of the plate or grind them off.

here is a long shot on WHY this MOLESTATION occurred......
maybe.... it was a private label, and someone thought it was "someone's watch", thinking they could hide the ownership......
in any case..... it is sad.

No, no, no--use this one for parts and acquire another movement for your case! (thieves usually grind off the serial no, not the name!)

Terry could be correct with the private label, here is the other pic on the re-etching of the case.
If it was a private label, someone did not like this guy.

Just a thought...thieves aside...
Perhaps it was a gift from a woman that the owner would rather have forgotten? Or maybe a gift from the girlfriend that the wife should not have seen???

Henry,
You better be careful. Picking up severely molested items like this will mark you as a true bottom feeder.
Personally, I enjoy the title bottom feeder, but I always pass on stuff as badly damaged as what you have displayed. I had no idea there was a bottom below where I feed.

I think D.Reed has it.
My brother in law gave me my second pocket watch... it was his ex wife's father's watch and his new wife wanted it out of the house.
This took some deep rooted emotion .

Gotta love some of these sellers.
Guy has 100 % rating with 480 hits.
Fuzzy pics, and he described this as "two minor blemishes"
If I was in this for the money, I would resort to that Ebay tatic of selling off the movement, case, and dial separately for more than I paid for the watch.
I am going to keep it however, and make up a story about the woman who gave this to her lover, then got deserted at the altar.

As I am cleaning it, and contemplating its final fate, I saw this under-neath the dial plate
Pat May 5, 1896
Never noticed that before on my few Hamiltons I own. Also that Montgomery dial is a 4 legger, as is shown by the plate dial holes.
I expected to find a three leg dial.

Henry:
The four-footed dial lasted until serial numbers in the high 800,000's on some grades, the very low 1,000,000's on others (the 900,000's are 18-size watches).

According to Hamilton records the three foot dial was changed on the 992 in 1912 with serial number 880001. The three pin balance cock was introduced at the same time. For the 974 pendant set the change was made in 1911 with number 858001 and for the 974 lever set in 1912 with number 880601. The 975 was changed the same year with number 1016001. Finally the 950 was changed over in 1915 with serial number 1021001 (no indication the balance cock was changed on the 950).

Ed and I are collecting data on the higher grade Eaton watches (link to example below) and would appreciate receiving the descriptions from owners.

Clearly some dope thought he was covering his tracks on a stolen watch at one time and did that. Clearly.
Laughable.
Sad.

The Hamilton runs so well, I am going to keep it.
If you need Hamilton parts:
Jim Haney at POCWATJIM@aol.com is great to deal with.

I have this on a canadian forces issue pocket watch, the issue number on the case and a i.d number on the movement were removed with a dremel or some tool.
I am thinking whoever was suppose to return the watch wanted to keep it instead.
