The book "Hamilton Serial Numbers and Production Figures with Price Guide", Roy Ehrhardt, Heart of America Press, Kansas City, MO, 1981 (A new edition is still in print - see Heart of America Press (http://www.hoapress.com)) contains reprints of pages from a 1930 distributor catalog (A.C. Becken), which in itself reprinted Hamilton catalog pages. Several pages show the Decagon, a ten-sided Hamilton case which could be had with a variety of Hamilton movements (of different quality). Its possible that there is an earlier Hamilton case that is eight-sided. Or, its possible that the Hamilton movement was placed into a third party case by a distributor or retailer.
If you open the back of the case (its probably a Snap-Back case), and tell us all of the markings on the movement and on the case back, we can probably tell you more about the watch. You might find the information in "How To Open A Pocket Watch Case" (http://www.knology.net/~ksinger/opencase.txt) useful.
I'm not sure about Suffolk county, but there used to more antique dealers than Heinz has beans on Merrick Road, Route 27A in Nassau county. But, if you want somebody to tell you about your watch, there used to be an antique watch shop on the west side of Route 106/107 in Hicksville, just a block or so north of Mid-Island Plaza. There was also a clock shop that handled antique watches on the same road in Hicksville, about 3 or 4 blocks south of the railroad station, on the east side of the street.
Good luck,
Kent
