Cylindre in English is cylinder and refers to the watch mechanism. It was used in a wide variety of Swiss watches up to the 1930's.
The mechanism was invented by the Englishman, George Graham in the early 1700's. Originally it was only on the highest quality watches, but eventually over the next 200 years as the mechanism became obsolescent, it was used on less expensive Swiss watches almost exclusively.
