it isnt really. I picked up some parts movments, both 17j Waltham 18s and one of the dials is a "real" DS dial. The second one has the seconds chapter "sunk" but the middle is simply, thinner?? I think I saw an eboy ad, where someone called this a shaved dial. Is that the correct term?

I pulled the dial, and it is one piece except for the seconds chapter.

It still looks fancier than a basic single sunk.

As far as the movments go, it is on the lower grade movement, Waltham, while the true DS is Marked American waltham watch co

Just wondering,

Cary
P.s. I chickened out on my roller jewel replacement. Without a staking set, I figured it would really be a "pay now or pay big later.

Cary,

Waltham called them "ground center". I've also heard (and sometimes use) the term "recessed center".

I don't know what they're called but the very first pocket watch I ever bought had one on it:

I've since discovered that this style of dial is a bit too recent for the watch it is on, meaning that it's likely a replacement. You're right, though -- it's still nicer than a single sunk dial.

I've always assumed that these "faux" double sunk dials were basically just cheaper versions used on lowre grade watches. However, I've also read in recent years that single sunk dials are supposedly stronger than their duble sunk counterparts (which is why Ball used single sunk dials on his RR watches), so I suppose it's possible these dials were actually considered better quality and not cheaper.

Naaaah. Any strength advantage was probably an unplanned consequence of making the manufacturing process less expensive.
