Rather than get mired in a thread that is overloaded I thought it best to separate the discussion of recased Howards.

Yesterday while shopping around town I found a Howard L-size that was an even more obvious recase than any of the examples mentioned so far. The case had no Howard markings at all and the movement showed a good millimeter of gap space (or more) from the case all around the edge.

Despite this obvious problem the dealer was pretty proud of the watch (as evidenced by the price).

If you run across auctions that have clear pictures of recased Howards, please email me a URL at c2d2@flash.net or post the pointer as a reply to this topic after the auction closes.

Greg,

Is this a survey or a study? There are just too many recased Howards to keep track of.

Consider it a study. I'm not looking to find out about every one, but to get a sense for the different ways one detects a mis-cased Howard.
