Can anyone identify the maker of the following hunter cased quarter hour repeater? The movement looks to me like a Lecoultre (but not signed under the hammer) but more important is the curvette which is the same (description order, script and decorations)as numerous complicated Lecoultre I have seen.

I called the Swiss patent office and found that the patent number on the movement (#8527) was awarded to Jules Jacot-Houriet on May 1, 1894. Pritchard notes that "he made complicated pieces" and that his patent was used by other makers (she notes Les Fils De R. Picard/Invicta). The case has the expected gold hallmarks for Germany and Switzerland and import Austro-Hungarian hallmarks. It also has an anvil/hammer mark I have not been able to identify.

Can anyone identify the maker - Lecoultre or otherwise? Estimated production date? Anvil hallmark identification? Any and all information welcome - even educated quesses!

Hello Mike,
thanks for your Private Message but unfortunately I haven´t received any pictures. Just read my answering in order to check my Private Mail adress.

This beautiful movement is build into two pieces (like LE PHARE Calendar or Perpetuals):
first a base movement and
second a calendar module fixed onto the dial side (LE PHARE used either 21 and 22"' modules).

To identify the maker you´re on the right way with the patent but there should be some more signs like under the hammers or under the dial (that´s the risky part to check, I know). Patents are mostly signs who made the here used technical invention. To identify just in case 100 per cent, there should be at the minimum a second prove like another engraving or sign of the maker.

Sending you my best regards
Tony

Mike...., by the way: what about the actually Miss World? She´s a Czech beauty.... great!

Tony,

Hi. Thanks for the response. I am hoping someone recognises the movement and can ID or point me in the right direction. Also, let me know if you need any Swiss patent look ups as I have found a very helpful agent at the Swiss patent office.

Mike

Hi Mike,
there´s something: I search since a while a direct link to the British Patent office, cause the Swiss Patent CH-334 (08.01.1889/16.03.1889; belongs to C.Barbezat-Baillot) exists as US-433225 (09.05.1889/29.07.1890), also as GB-? (xx.xx.1889/04.04.1889). Here I´m searching firstly the British patent Number, the date of archiving and the direct link to this patent.

Tony,

Unfortunately, I do not have any sources for UK patent information.

If anyone has a watch with the patent number referenced above (or ever searches this forum for it) the following is from the Swiss patent office:

Expose D'Invention
Brevet No 8527
1 Mai 1894
Classe 64
Jules Jacot-Houriet, au Locle (Suisse)
Platine pour montres repetitions avec ou sans complications

The above is followed by an explanation and drawing. If there is interest, I will post a scan of the document.

Mike
