I just bought another one. I don't know what it is, but I bought it anyway. I had seen them before, and the only thing I can find in any of the books I have is that watches with dust covers like this one were made in the 1800's. I don't have it in my hands yet, but there are no markings on the outside, and the person selling it did not know how to take the cover off to see what was under it. Somebody tell me something about this before it gets here. There are two pictures available:
Dial face (http://www.imagemotel.com/uploaded/Y87b0g0U.jpg)
Back side (http://www.imagemotel.com/uploaded/45Uw676R.jpg)
The only other description he gave was that it was 1 3/4" across and very heavy.
I guess I'll call it the "Mystery Watch" for now!!! Any comments - opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, jimbob (:{

Once you get the cap off you should find a Liverpool fuzee lever from around 1850 or so.

English.
Slide that curved spring from side to side so that the upright pin is in the larger hole slot within the spring; then, lift off the dust cover.

:biggrin: Thanks for the information. It gave me something to start searching for. I have found four or five different websites that had several fusee's on them. I found one watch that the back dust cover was identical to the one I am getting except for one minor detail - mine has some small design engraved on the click by the ratchet wheel. With the cover off, it had Liverpool on it. I found a couple more with "M. Tobias - Liverpool" on them also. But, I found three watches that had gilt dial faces like the one I am getting and on all three, the seconds bit was identical. On two of them the center design on the dial was different, but on one of them, the design was practically identical. Only very little differences were found in the small village scene with a sailboat in the harbor - almost like two different people drawing the exact same scene.
Now, I just hope the inside, under the dust cover, is as good looking and clean as the outside. The guy said he had never had the cover off because he didn't know how to remove it. :eek: :eek: I hope this is the expression on my face when I get it and take the cover off.
Well, WAIT & SEE!!!!! jimbob (:{
