Gentlemen,

Is there any rule of thumb as to what percentage of a watch chain is metal value (gold content) vs. how much of the value is based on antique status?

I see many sell at the gold value price only, unless there is something unusual to push the price up.

also depends on if you are talking gold fill vs solid...

but like anything else...

they don't make em like they used to !!!

If there is a very nice detailed chain with little or no wear... why scrap it?? especially solid gold...

I have seem a bunch of chains that are flat worn out... mostly gold filled...

it takes a lot of them for value at the scrap dealer......

WEIGHT, STYLE , LINK TYPE AND AGE MAKE UP THE VALUE OVER GOLD

Actually not an easy question in my opinion.

Some sell gold, and buy them for that, some love an antique chain, some only want solid gold, some love a unique chain, so it's really up to a buyer, and they are MANY. I can say for sure, that chains are getting higher and higher for the solid gold, however I see a lot of Gold Filled going for higher dollars than they sold for even a year ago.

I can tell you that a Gold Filled antique chain will catch my eye if it's in really good condition, but I personally have had it with the junk out there.

It's really "To each his own" on this issue, mainly because a "Newbie Collector" will buy an old chain sometimes, no matter what it looks like, until they learn more about them.

That's my experience, and boy, I sure wish there were more "New Antique Gold Filled Chains" out there, I would be first in line.

(Solid Gold is just too much for me at todays prices)

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DEALER AND THE CONSUMER.

GOLD IS IN GF SO WOULD WOULD NOT IT RISE ALSO? THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN DEMAND FOR GF CHAINS AND AS POPULARITY AND DEMAND INCREASES SO DOES THE PRICE.

SOME BUY CHAINS TO WEAR TO SAVE THEIR WATCH!

I HAVE MANY UNUSED ANTIQUE GOLD CHAINS IN MY COLL., EVEN WITH THEIR ORIG TAGS!

Jon,
I missed your post!
I couldn't agree more.

Weight, Style, Link Type, and Age are what it's all about! (To ME Too)

Good Answer!

As Jon mentioned, the gold prices can greatly effect the cost of even a GF chain.
The new GF and sterling chains we sell change in price evey time I order them from our vendor. I can't believe how much they cost now!! I am always sure I am in a calm mood and sitting down when I have to place an order!
