From NAWCC NEWS: To All NAWCC Members,
The NAWCC School of Horology has recently seen significant improvements
in curriculum and schedules, resulting from the efforts of our School
staff headed by Director Dan Nied. Here is an opportunity for NAWCC
members to take part in our School training, with much of the expense
being paid by The Midwest Regional Scholarship Fund which is detailed
below. This fund has been advertised in the MART but little response has
been received. Please note that applications should be made quickly, as
the scholarship winners will be selected and announced at our National
Convention in July.
All NAWCC members are eligible to apply, for information contact Bill
Keller, Chairman of the Selection Committee, at 7916 W. Hillside Rd.,
Crystal Lake, IL 60012, telephone (815) 459-3712, or e-mail

THE MIDWEST REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
It was just over ten years ago that the then Co-chairmen of the Midwest
Regional Convention, George Brusky and David Stephens, began a discussion
with the Regional Board regarding possible disposition of the excess
funds in the Regional account. Should they be distributed among the four
sponsoring chapters? Should they be given to the Association or the
Museum? Might a free admission Regional be planned, one underwritten by
the use of the excess? All were given due consideration, and it was
generally agreed that establishing a scholarship fund to further the
educational goals of NAWCC would be the best use for the excess.
Additionally, it was suggested that this would help combat the feeling
some had that ours were essentially "mart" chapters.
After considerable discussion, it was decided that only the income from
the money in the Fund would be used for the scholarships, no principal.
The money was to be invested by other than Regional members, and the
scholarship awards could be used to attend either NAWCC or AWI sponsored
programs, i.e. their schools, suitcase courses, or seminars. It was
stated and understood that awards would be made to any NAWCC member, not
just
members of Regional sponsoring chapters, and that they would be awarded
based on documented need.
To eliminate the possibility of bias in selecting scholarship winners, it
was agreed that the Selection Committee should be composed of five
members with the majority having "national" responsibilities. Two
members are from the Regional Board with the remaining three being the
Executive Director, the Conservator of the Museum or the School Director,
and the National Treasurer.
The scholarship year begins and ends with the date ot the annual National
Convention and winners are announced at that time. For the first several
years only two scholarships were awarded. As the earnings on the
deposited funds increased, thanks to the help of the NAWCC Investment
Committee, as many as seven have been awarded in one year. Moreover, in
the absence of enough applicants to utilize the earnings, money has been
allocated to the School
to help equip an additional classroom, and to the Education Committee for
a Suitcase Course tool kit.
Any members interested in applying for scholarships should contact Bill
Keller, Chairman of the Selection Committee at 7916 W. Hillside Rd.,
