Mike,

Welcome to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Message Board. There are 3,000 + registered posters here, plus probably as many more who are not registered. The accumulated knowledge here is as great as you will likely find anywhere. You are welcome to draw on this knowledge at will, and it is free to members and non-members alike.

According to Shugart, Engel, and Gilbert, the wheat sheaf does denote karat gold, but it doesn't specify the karat. I think the 14 karat is a safe bet, but one can't be certain without testing it. Very pretty case on that one. Looks almost as though it has spent its entire life in a chamois pouch, in a drawer.

Here is another thread that discusses some of the case marks.

Apparently the wheat sheaf on a BWCCo case may indicate a lower karat gold, or at least that the case is not all the same karat.

Mike:

Brooklyn's description of its Wheat grade case is contained in their 1887 ad, linked to below. According to that ad, the Wheat case has a 14K layer oluter layer bonded to an 8K inner layer.
