Hello everybody. I think you folks can help me. I'm trying to verify if this pocket watch is what it appears to be. I've done a little research and got some advice on the AWCo forum, and it appears that this was made in 1873 (by searching the American/Waltham serial number database).

I guess I'm looking for confirmation. I've had this watch just stuck in a desk drawer, wrapped up in a paper towel. My mom gave it to me several years before she died in 2003 at age 86. Yeah, I figured it was old...but not THAT old. Quite honestly, I'm kinda shocked...

What say ye? Opinions? Comments?

Thanks in advance.

Out of curiosity I looked up your watch's serial number and found the same info that you did. Your model 57 PJ Bartlett was made in Jan through March, 1873. It appears to be in a nickel silver open faced case. Could you tell us about any markings on the case.

You have a great watch IMHO in that the model 1857 was the first successful industrial produced watch in America. If you go to the NAWCC book store page they have a book on your watch that was published last year.

Syd,
Welcome to the board!

Here is my latest post addressing your questions on the thread you started on the American Watch Company (http://mcintyre.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2470&highlight=) fourms:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Yes, this is the famous Waltham model 1857 keywind. And according to the database, this PS Bartlett grade was produced in a run between Jan and March of 1873. Furthermore, from the documantation and the photo of the watch, I can say with a good amount of certainty, your watch has 11 jewels.

I am not sure that the case was the original case that came with that watch when it was produced. It appears nickel - not silver - from the photo. They didn't have nickel cases in 1873. Any markings inside the case lids? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
