View Full Version : Does anybody else ever take a vacation day...more
pick out a direction and just drive for hours looking for watches. I did that yesterday. Took my son to school, got to work, realized I had finished my month end work Friday, so I just left. Headed north. I didnt find diddly squat, but it really helps the stresses in life and I COULD have stumbled on a realy nice watch. Got home about the time I would have gotten off work and nobody was the wiser.
I highly recommend it.

Cary, I do it frequently. It is expecially fun in the summer during yard sale season. I have made some of my best finds doing this. I will admit that things are not what they were five years ago, but I still occasionally find a real sleeper. During the past year I found a 992 for $35, a Waltham grade 845 for $20, a LeCoultre alarm watch for 10 cents, and many common grade items for under $5. Probably my best find at a yard sale was the Illinois aluminum cigarette style case for a Bunn Special. It was 5 cents. Tom

Tom, I'm jealous. All I ever do at garage sales is waste gasoline! I can't even find a pair of pants that fit. Come to think of it, Sears doesn't have pants that fit me either?

We have a town approximately 1 hour south of here. The place is full of pawn shops and second hand stores. I check there ofter. Prices arnt all that great but there all the same. A gold filled 16s is one price alot of times, no matter what, and all are a little spendy so most are too spendy. But..... There was a nice 23j Sangamo spl. to be had for 200.00, not bad. It was next to twn 7j Elgins all the same price. It has a new home now. So its a hit and miss deal, and mostly miss. Happy hunting.

I travel almost every day to do my job. I visit just about every town with a decent sized printer in the Mid-West. I usually spend my lunch break looking for watches. The pickings have been slim for a few years, but recently things have picked up a little.
As a side note, despite what Charlie Medsker may say, he is in fighting shape. The only reason he might not be able to find pants at yard sales is that most of the sellers are not as slim as he is. Charlie is slim from so much running around after all the good buys. He always finds 'em before I do. Come buy his watches at the Mid-America in Fort Wayne.

I take a vacation every week. I manage a 13 state area and hit every junk store, flea market, and antique store from Florida over to Texas and up to Nebraska/Iowa. Found a cheap 18s Bunn lately in Florida but overall the pickings are pretty slim. I'm starting to learn who has the watches but they are awfully proud of them.

John, Thanks for the laff, but my high blood pressure won't let me get too excited anymore.

Houston is such a big place you can spend a lot of time just trying to pick this sprawling metroplex clean. But I think I've managed to do it several times over now. Carolyn and I go out of town at least once a month, just to see something we don't see the other weekends that we are picking the town clean. She's always on the hunt for bakelite, and I'm always scouting for watches... all sorts.
I usually find something. Nothing you guys would care about, but something I can enjoy. Last week I scooped up a 40 cent dark blue (looked black to me) bakelite bangle, which Carolyn will probably sell next week (for a nice mark up, naturally).
It's all about the hunt for me. And once the hunt is over, it's about deciding what's for keeps and what's for sale. I do love this game.
