I have an early Waltham stem wind, lever set pocket watch and I' not sure what model it actually is. It is identical to the model 1857. It is 1.53 inches at the back of the dial plate so I'm not sure whether it is a size 17 or 18 although it is closer to the 18. The only model that comes close is the 1857. The serial no is 808642 which would date it around 1874 and it has Patent Feb 4, 1968 on the side dust cover. FOGGS Patent is written under just below the regulator. Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

According to the serial number list in Ehrhardt's "Waltham Pocket Watch Identification and Price Guide", HOA Press, 1976, your watch is a Model 57 and is one of a run that ran from # 808001- 809000. It is listed as a Waltham Watch Co. grade with 15 jewels. Does this description seem to fit your watch?

Hi Greg,
Welcome to the NAWCC Message Board!
Although the factory records indicate that your watch is a keywind, the records are known to be in error, and the model 57 was definitely made in a stem wind lever set version. I think they are cool watches and they came with some neat variations like the patented let down screw, some with nickel plates, private labels, etc. The cases also have a somewhat unique bezel.
Can you post a picture of yours?
ADD: I see Ron and I were typing at the same time...

If this is a model 57 it would be a size 18.
Welcome to the board!
