Well, I guess I have again seen that "old money" does not equal good taste in watches. Today, as the resident "expert" of my small town, I was allowed in to "pre preview" a major estate auction of one of our "Old money" families. I guess I am the expert because I own a Shuggarts , With great excitement, I had arranged for a back up funding source if the pocket watch lot was a good one.

Guess what the lot was? 5 newer quartz hunting cased watches and one size 12 Elgin. The auctioneer brings me the box like it is the Holy Grail..holding it out like it is pure gold..

I think he sensed my dissapointment. Oh well, another day I will find those treasures.

I do wonder if the big invited dealers dont take the good goods to a better market.

Keep on huntin,

Cary

Thanks Cary.

Of course, the other possibility is that the good stuff didn't make it to the auction. There are a number of fine watches and clocks in my father's family and its most likely that they will stay in the family or go to friends, not to the estate auction.

Yet another possibility is that some shark got there first and ate all the good fish.

AAAARGH..it gets worse...The "good" pocket watch was in a box of cufflinks and nail clippers.

A perfect 16s 17 jewel Waltham Hunter.

Lady pays 35.00 for the box and pulls out the watch..I offer to triple her money and she tells me NO.

I love auctions.

Hey Cary, interesting story... what do you bet the Waltham will be on e-bay next week with a thousand dollar reserve!

You just explained my aversion to auctions in great detail, keep enjoying the hunt!

Hey Cary, Why didn't you tell us in the beginning what P--sed you off (not being able to buy the box with the nail clippers)? There are good days and bad days. You must of had a bad day - look forward to the next good day. That is the challenge or this entire collecting thing or it would not be fun or challenging.
