When a particular movement is listed on the Elgin database, oftentimes several other movement numbers are listed under the same code, usually with varying numbers of jewels. Do all the movements listed under a particular code share the exact same parts(except for the jewel settings)? Can interchange of parts be considered across the spectrum of movement numbers listed? In other words, will the same setting lever or staff be used on all of them? Thanks

A quick check of my Elgin parts list shows (for example) a 0-size Grade 409, class 117 movement with 7 jewels, then a 0-size Grade 410, class 117 movement with 15 jewels. Further on, it shows a smaller 3-0 size Grade 414, class 117 movement with 7 jewels, then a 3-0 size, grade 416, class 117 movement with 15 jewels. To deal with your question regarding balance staffs, the parts list shows the same staff for any class 116 or 117 movement. This would seem to imply that the 0-size and 3/0 size grade 117 used the same balance staff, part # 869. If you want to quote specific numbers, perhaps we can give a more focused answer.

Doug, thanks for responding, but I think I need be a little more specific. By code, I mean for example: 03n3P. I have a 315 movement under this code, but there are a number of Elgins that fall under this same code. I believe I saw a reference somewhere that indicated that parts are interchangeable for all grades that fall under the same code number. If this is correct, it would make finding a parts movement or a specific replacement part a whole lot easier.

Serial number of the movement please! Not the serial number on the case. The numbers you gave are meaningless to me. If your "315" movement is a Grade 315, then the class is 114, 12-size. open-faced, nickel, third model, lever set, 15 jewels. The part number for a class 114 balance staff is part # 1905, the setting lever is part # 1832. The serial number determines the Grade, the grade number gives the CLASS, and the CLASS number is necessary to give specific PART numbers. SERIAL number please!

wmetcalf:

The same web site that gave you the code, Wayne Schlitt's Elgin watch web site at <span class="ev_code_brown">elginwatches.com</span>, has explanations of the code. More importantly it also shows the class number, which defines the material grade to use for replacements.

If you look under "Technical Documents" in the "Documents & Pictures" section, you'll find material catalogs. Try the 1915 MC, which covers a wide variety of watches (if your watch is that early). It lists the parts by model and class number.

Good luck,

Thanks for your help. It was "class" I was looking for, not the code. And thanks for pointing me to the other menu items on Wayne's site. I have been watching his site since he first began putting it up and hadn't really explored all the menu choices he has available now.
