Dear Members:
As part of the work to stabilize NAWCC financial matters for the long
term, Council has found it necessary to
increase dues while efforts to build revenue through endowment funds,
museum attendance and grants continue. Dues increases are an
unsatisfactory solution to cash flow problems, but the continuing slow
decline of membership levels is about to outpace our ability to balance
budgets through cost savings and member/chapter donations.
The NAWCC still has more than one million dollars in uncommitted
reserves. The number is not exact because the funds are in conservative
investments whose value changes with the market. The building expansion
loan is fully
covered by separate reserved funds. But, the uncommitted reserves will be
spent in a few years if membership continues to decline, leaving us more
and more exposed to risk of unplanned expenditures or limiting services.
The dues increases voted by Council at the July10 and 11 2001 meeting
were as follows:
_Life Membership fee increases to $1500 immediately.
_USA-resident dues will increase to $50 on January1, 2002. That is a $5
increase per year.
_New members will pay $60 first year dues, effective as soon as
practicable (October 1, 2001). After the first year new member dues
revert to the $50 rate.
_US residents whose dues have lapsed for more than 120 days will pay a
$10 reinstatement fee in addition to their regular annual dues. Such a
person will retain his/her membership number and will retain his/her
anniversary date-- (not receiving a new one as now happens). Missed back
issues of the Bulletin will be provided by NAWCC back to the
member's anniversary date if that is less than one year. This clause is
effective when practicable, (probably Jan.1, 2002).
Council has concerns about the ability to administer the lapsed member
dues complexity, so will consider this
item further in the next few weeks.
Finally, no increases are to be made now for non USA-resident members,
pending a study of efforts to reduce
international mailing costs. Council will address this subject in January
2002 at the next meeting.
Respectfully, Doug Cowan, President, Dojec@cs.com
