Happened across this, and it just doesn't look "right". I know it's recased, probably redialed, but the s/n shows to be a 10 size Ellery from 1874, and this is a much earlier 18 size watch: look at the jeweling and banking pins.
What is it?

Alan,
I believe the serial number is 112555--yes I know it looks distorted in the pictures.

That makes more sense, but didn't these have screw-type banking pins by then?

I DO NOT HAVE THE WATCH IN HAND BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BB HAS BEEN SWITCHED???

The first "7" looks bigger than the second one on my computer. It might even have been 72555 once. ?

I read the serial number as 772555 - but that does not fit with the entry in the Waltham database!?
The number 112555 would be suitable with the Waltham database...

To all,
Many times these early engravers did odd things with numbers, esp 1 and 7s, 6, and 8s, etc.
The movement is obviously not a 10s size and the type and style of the PSB mov't is early.
The real asnwer lies on the underside of the BB.
The bal wheel looks to be gold instead of steel on my screen. the ledgers show it as a steel wheel.
Jon, our resident Waltham expert, do you have a count of how many (approx) had gold balances? These seem to be much more rare (and I assumed earlier than this).
"School is in...."
