Which direction do I turn the winding wheel screw to remove it, clockwise or counter clockwise? It's tight and I don' want to snap the head off!
Also, who sells a mainspring for this same watch? Thanks in advance.

Tomas....
The Hamilton service bulletin for the 35 size watches indicates to replace the mainspring:
1)let down any residual torque in the mainspring.
2) Remove right hand threaded winding wheel screw to release winding wheel from the barrel bridge.
3) Remove barrel bridge screws.
4)Gently hold down winding wheel and remove entire barrel bridge.
5) Lift out barrel assembly and replace spring in the usual manner.
Assemble the parts in the reverse order.
If you don't have a large enough mainspring winder, you will have to wind it by hand.
Larry Crutsinger Detent21@aol.com has mainsprings and other parts.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi,
I own a Hamilton Mod. 22 that was from my dad's jewelry store which I recently serviced. I didn't have nearly big enough a mainspring winder so I made a retention ring of the proper size out of a nice thick piece of aluminum tubing I found. I cut a slot at an angle and then used a barrel arbor in my lathe to wind it. This seemed to work quite satisfactorily but I would recommend using a good deal of caution.
Winding a mainspring in by hand can sometimes cause deformation of the spring. This will cause unnecessary friction against the top and bottom of the barrel thereby hampering the movement's ability to keep accurate time. As keeping accurate time is the Mod. 22's only purpose winding the spring by hand is certainly less than ideal but I realize that in the absence of proper equipment it sometimes happens.
I noticed that F. Hougham, 601 Mason Ave, Daytona Beach, FL, PH# 904/673-4146 (after 7PM), advertised in the August MART that he had Mod. 22 mainsprings.
I hope this helped.
Sincerely, Richard Rogers

Thank you gentlemen. I managed to get the mainspring out without breaking anything. That darn thing is just shy of 5 feet long!
