I recently purchased a self-winding watch in Belgium. The face is quite different. The minute hand moves left to right and SNAPS back every hour. The hour hand does the same every 12 hours. The face looks like a fuel guage in a car. It also has the date. I have never seen anything like this. I was told it is vintage 1970. Anyone out there ever see one? There is no name on it.

Hi Bob,

Wittnauer had a watch like this in their line in the 1970s. The model was called the "Sector 2000", and it had "flyback" display such as you describe. Hands that do this are sometimes called "flirts" I believe. If yours was a Wittnauer however, I would expect that there would be a name on the dial.Interesting watch.

Doug S.

The Jean d'Eve Sectora is such a watch. They make it in a variety of grades distinguished by case materials. Does yours look like this one?

It is close but not exact. It is a half circle. Maybe I will take a picture of it and send it via email. Thanks for replying.

Bob

That is one fine looking watch. It takes a lot for me to really sit up when it comes to wristwatches. Is it in production now? By your use of tense "make" rather than "made"
How did you come to own it?

The Sectora is still available I think. I have not checked recently, but they were making it 3 years ago. They may not be making the non-quartz any longer. The example I posted was quartz.

I recall that LeTourneau in NY had them a few years ago.

I sold that one on eBay a while ago and the lady who bought it was overwhelmed. Nice to have a satisfied customer. I bought it at the National in Portland.

I did a quick search on the web and found a site that has the Jean d'Eve watches for sale The Sectora was selfwinding with a glass back, numerals weren't as exagerated, and different lugs and there was a date window center top. 0 . Interestingly here is another Jean d'Eve watch that looked like the half moon Bob mentions no date function but similar lugs. If there is more interest I will dig up the site and post it.

The first example I ever saw was owned by an advanced collector in Florida attending the National in Buffalo. It was 18K 2 tone gold, manual wind and cost in 5 figures. http://www.nawcc.org/ubb/eek.gif

The quartz example was much, much less expensive.

Interesting. The one I have is round (gold) with white numbers and a tan background. There is NO identification on the face or the back. It does have the date.
