Dear Members:
Update on search for a new Executive Director for NAWCC/NWCM.
From Fortunat Mueller-Maerki, Search Committee Coordinator

The search for a new Executive Director for NAWCC/NWCM has entered the
active
search and candidate identification phase with the publication of a job
specification, newspaper ads, job board postings etc.
The past few weeks have focused on formalizing and formulating a wide
based
agreement on the nature and scope of the job, and the critical competencies
required in the role. The resulting job specification can be found at the
NAWCC
website or at www.horology.com/specs.html (http://www.horology.com/specs.html)
In the coming days all department heads in Columbia will be formally invited
to
apply for the job if they feel they meet the specifications.
At this stage all members, chapters etc. are encouraged to spread the word,
and
bring the job specifications to the attention of qualified applicants.
The full text of the job specification is attached.

Executive Director - Association Executive
of a National Collectors Association and a Major National Specialized Small
Museum,
as well as its affiliated Publications, Library, Research Center, and
Technical
School

THE ORGANIZATION
The National Watch and Clock Museum / National Association of Watch and
Clock
Collectors are the nation's preeminent organization devoted to the
appreciation
and study of timekeeping and the preservation and collecting of clocks,
watches
and related items.
The museum serves both the general public and a specialized member audience
by
featuring permanent as well as temporary exhibits on themes straddling
history
and science. They also operate the world's largest research and lending
library
devoted to this subject. They publish a scholarly journal on timekeeping,
and
operate a School of Horology, training future watch and clock repairers.
Other
events include seminars, workshops, lectures, and exhibits, organized
nationwide
partly through a network of 180 local chapters. All these not-for-profit
educational activities are primarily supported by the dues of a Membership
Association with about 30'000 members. Association activities also include
local, regional and national meetings, which offer collectors an opportunity
for
fellowship and for trading and acquiring items related to timekeeping.
The organization is well respected, has been active for decades, has a
significant asset base (real estate and collections), and a modest
endowment,
but limited cash reserves for operational initiatives. There are currently
two
separate legal entities, operating in an integrated manner. The core
challenge
the organization faces is how to maintain their educational services for
their
diverse public constituencies in the face of a shrinking membership base.
THE LOCATION
Columbia PA is a picturesque, quiet, small town on the fringe of the
Pennsylvania Dutch Tourist Region, about two hours drive from such major
urban
centers as Philadelphia or Baltimore, and less than 30 minutes from the
small
cities of Lancaster PA or York PA.
THE POSITION
The Executive Director, who reports to a Board of Directors, is the "Chief
Executive Officer" of a complex, multi-faceted operation with a budget of
over
$2 million and currently about 30 employees, plus numerous volunteers. The
role
carries full and undivided operational and financial responsibility for all
aspects of running the organization. Direct reports include the Department
Heads for Museum, Library, Publications, School, Marketing, Development,
Membership Services and Finance/Administration. Personal involvement in
fundraising and membership development will be required, given the strategic
importance of these tasks.
Continued on Page 2
CRITICAL COMPETENCIES
· The role calls for an executive with a documented track record of success
in
managing all aspects of a complex organization, from formulating a vision to
managing the bottom line. Experience in both strategic and operational
leadership in a not-for-profit environment with a multifaceted constituency
of
the general public, staff, volunteers and members is required.
· We are looking for an innovator, team integrator and "change agent", with
proven people management and communication skills, who has successfully
designed
as well as implemented a turnaround or restructuring strategy.
· A successful prior career on the "business" side of a cultural
institution, or
a related membership organization, with a marketing mindset, solid
administrative skills, and experience with financial planning is desired.
Exposure to fund-raising and grant-writing would be helpful, but is not a
precondition.
· Needed personal traits include an analytic mindset, diplomacy, high
energy,
intellectual curiosity, loyalty, and integrity.
Specific prior experience in a museum setting or with horology (i.e. the
science
of time-keeping) is not a precondition as long as this Executive Director
has
the intellectual curiosity to delve into the specific subject matter, and
become
an engaged and enthusiastic spokesperson for "Timekeeping", a fascinating
subject at the crossroads of technical innovation, artistic expression,
history,
science and the role of "time" in society.
COMPENSATION
An attractive compensation package has been designed to appeal to the
experienced and skilled Executive Director we seek. There also is a
competitive
benefits package, including health and retirement benefits. Relocation
assistance can be provided if warranted.
