Though not a complete reference to cover them all, the book
"TRADEMARKS" by Roy Ehrhardt, [available from Heart of America Press] give markings of many cases.
This book is also available sometimes at marts, emart, ebay, etc.....

I think we all know that Defiance cases are base metal, but is there any advertising or literature documenting this? I looked through my copy of Ehrhardt's trademark book and did not find it there.

cort,
this is possible, but this area is subject to rapid wear and it may not always be visible...

Does anybody know the approximate date that these base metal cases came on the market?

By definition of "base metal" the various silveroid case types would be base metal.
I think this discussion is about the chrome plated or nickel plated base metal cases that seem to have appeared in the late 20's.
The fact that they exist in 18 size as well as 16 size and smaller suggests that they may have been intended as inexpensive replacement cases for worn out gold filled and gold cases.
Perhaps they became "popular" during the depression when a lot of gold cases were scrapped for bread money.
